American soldiers who refuse to be immunised against Covid-19 will be discharged, effective immediately, the US military has said.
In a release this week, army officials said they will “immediately begin separating soldiers from the service” who refuse to be vaccinated.
“Army readiness depends on soldiers who are prepared to train, deploy, fight and win our nation’s wars,” Christine Wormuth, the army secretary, said. “Unvaccinated soldiers present a risk to the force and jeopardise readiness.”
The force added that soldiers discharged for refusing vaccines will not be eligible for “involuntary separation pay”.
Six regular Army leaders—including two battalion commanders—have been relieved, while general officers have issued 3,073 written reprimands over vaccine refusal. The vast majority of Army members—like the other U.S. military branches—are vaccinated against coronavirus.
