The young man at his early 20s had provided transport services to the two police officers to Malindi airport. However, after he dropped them and asked for his 50 shillings Bodaboda fare, the two officers descended on him shooting him direct on the head, killing him instantly. The officers who are mandated to protect lives and properties of Kenyans were said to be drunk during the shooting. The police officers then went inside the Malindi airport like nothing has happened, leaving the deceased lying beside his Bodaboda. The unfortunate incident, elicited immediate reactions from the Bodaboda riders who pelted stones at the Malindi airport demanding for the release of the two police officers so that they revenge. Some Malindi based journalists who had visited the scene to cover the incident were also injured in fracas. Police are yet to issue official statement over the killing incident. Human rights defenders in Malindi have linked the reckless killing with the recent remarks from Inspector General of police Japheth Koome who said police can justify killings whenever they are protecting themselves. The activists have vowed to follow up on the incident and ensure the security agents are thrown behind bars. They have also appealed to the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to swing to action and investigate the murder incident.
