I usually take these stories with a pinch of salt. First Africa is really, really huuuuuuge and diverse continent. A Gikuyu is genetically as different from a Turkana as a Japanese is from a French guy, for example. So, there's nothing like 'African culture'.
Secondly, without context these stories are crap. For example, in many eastern Africa Bantu cultures a woman can marry another woman. When they are introduced they are called husband and wife! But their union is non-sexual, and the wife's duty is to get children for her female 'husband' with men out there.
