Last year, Azimio heavily opposed the Finance Bill 2023. On the other hand,Kenya kwisha legislators passed it, only to tell us later that they had not read the bill.
The last 10 months have been tough for individuals and businesses. Many people have been retrenched as companies are unable to keep up with the high tax demands; many businesses have closed down and others scaled down; fuel consumption and general spending is at an all time low as people try to save every coin, and purchasing power parity has been greatly affected.
As a result, KRA is going to miss its target by about 300 billion. But it seems Ruto’s administration has not learnt any lesson yet. The Finance Bill 2024 will be even be more punitive. One is left to wonder, what really is the end game?
Why make worse an already bad situation, while clearly the move is counter productive? On the other hand, the way some legislators are discussing this bill, it’s either they are arrogant or extremely ignorant.
My fear is that they will repeat the mistake they made last year, as the big picture is completely lost to them. If only we had a good number of noble legislators who would honor the fundamental principle of our August house, “For the Welfare of Society and the Just Government of the People”.
