THE RISING COMMUTER FARES IN THE COUNTRY ARE NOT SUSTAINABLE
I usually don't commute during peak hours or on a daily basis. So I was surprised to hear that matatus on our route charge KShs 100 one way in the morning and evening peak hours.
If someone commutes for 26 days a month this would translate to a transport cost of KShs 5,200. Isn't this too much?
Considering that many people earn less than KShs 30,000 a month this would translate to at least 17% of ones monthly income.
It is a shame that MPs never discuss these issues. Crude oil prices are threatening to shoot past USD 70 per barrel. Can our people sustain the burden of high fuel prices?
The government must reduce the high taxes it is levying on fuel. Fuel is one of the most critical production inputs in the economy. We can't justify taxing fuel as if it were a contraband.

Serikali ya Kenya never protects Kenyans from unscrupulous sharks kapsaa! Mara nyingi matatu fares are uncourteously and illegally hiked during rush seasons that are occasioned by many different reasons. It could big holiday seasons like Easter or crismas. But hivi karibuni sababu ilikua korona iliofanya abiria kupunguzwa due to social distancing regulations. Sasa hio social distancing haiko tena. Na fare hairudishwi chini just like hairudishwi chini rush ikiisha. Na serikali iko hapo like vegetating zombies!

One observation you may have made is during these holidays/ ocassions huwa kuna abiria upande mmoja tu. There might, for instance, be many passengers heading from Nbi to Múrang’a during Easter break but none heading in the opposite direction, yet gari itatumia mafuta kurudi. That’s why unaonanga many weekends kukiwa na shortage ya magari coz many vehicles get stuck on the side where there are fewer passengers. The alternative is for the vehicle to come (half) empty but levy higher fares to cover the cost.

Na fare hairudishwi chini just like hairudishwi chini rush ikiisha.

The revamped commuter rail and national meter gauge rail will play a big role in curbing the high transport costs.

Shida utasikia the snobbish middle class, who most likely have a multitude of options to choose from, complaining anga the trains are ancient, slow, bad for the environment.

Someone opting for the train knows exactly the benefits he is deriving from it and would gladly overlook the cosmetic and optics setbacks.
