the Redykyulass comedian who made a fool of IEBC in quest to actualise dream
The clearance of presidential aspirants for the August 9 election by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ended this week with as much drama as it began towards the end of last month.

However, amidst the drama, fanfare and heartbreaks for a majority of the hopefuls, one man stood out for managing to make the exercise look ‘Redykyulass’ by taking his comedy too far during the process.

That man is Walter Mong’are, alias Nyambane. The Umoja Summit Party leader became the first presidential aspirant to be cleared to contest the presidency in the upcoming polls.

Unbeknownst to many, however, the former member of the famous Redykyulass comedy group that gained fame mimicking influential individuals in a television show, had just turned the Bomas of Kenya, the venue of the exercise, into a theatre of sort.

For a man who had for a long time acted as former President Daniel arap Moi as part of Redykyulass comedy skits, Bomas proved a perfect stage that he could not ignore.

Armed with “transcripts”—perhaps as his comic script—Nyambane perfectly executed his stunts in the full glare of beaming cameras, with IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati roped in as the director of the show.

Declaring the comedian-turned-politician the first presidential candidate for the August polls, the soft spoken electoral agency chairman did not know what was in store for him.

“We want to confirm that you have complied with all the checklist. You will, therefore, be issued with a nomination certificate confirming you as the first presidential candidate to be cleared for the August 9 election to enable you [to] begin your campaigns,” said Mr Chebukati as he wished Nyambane all the best.

All the while, Mr Nyambane kept on smiling to the cameras as he surely milked his moment of fame to the last drop.

“Many of you know that for a very long time, I acted as president and I want to say that Moi is back,” he said to those who cared to listen, with echoes of a storyline from Ukraine where a comedian, Volodymyr Zelensky, was elected president.

Nonetheless, no one was able to read between the lines that the man from the land of matoke was up to his mischievous self once again.

“You (Chebukati) have done what is required and in a manner that is expected of you. It is a painless exercise and that is an assurance of a country that is ready for progress,” he said.

“As we start this journey on behalf of the many young men and women out here, I want to assure them that this certificate is not for Walter Mong’are…,” he again warned but as before, no one again cared.

In a typical Kenyan slang, sisi wote tulilala class (We were not paying attention). It only took a disgruntled aspirant, Jimi Wanjigi, to "snitch on", read smoke out, the comedy that was going on when he appeared before the electoral agency six days later.

The Safina party leader complained why he could not be cleared by the IEBC to run for president, yet he had also presented the same transcripts from Daystar University as Nyambane had done days before him and was cleared despite lacking a degree certificate.

With Mr Wanjigi fuming and threatening to ‘vaccinate’ the IEBC that he termed had mutated into a dangerous virus. The electoral agency had to act fast. And with that, suddenly the commission woke up from its slumber that it had been pranked by Nyambane the comedian.

The controversy over the academic qualifications of Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has taken a new twist after inconsistencies started to emerge on what the legislator has said in the past about the institution he attended for his undergraduate course. Mr Sakaja is vying for governor of Nairobi.

The Commission for University Education (CUE) told Sunday Nation that the senator presented a degree from a Ugandan university for regularisation, which he intended to use for clearance for the race, after a number of documents were leaked.
The University of Nairobi (UoN), where the senator has often claimed he graduated with a degree in actuarial science, told Sunday Nation that the senator is still a student and has not completed the course.

UoN communications director John Orindi said he was admitted to the university on a module two programme in 2003.
“It is true Sakaja was admitted to the university and was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, studied from first year up to fourth year, but is yet to graduate,” said Mr Orindi.

“The university earlier issued a statement... and was clear that the person in question did not complete his studies.”
The university, in a verification letter to the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) dated May 31 last year, said Mr Sakaja’s transcripts were incomplete.
“...they have not been signed by the university,” the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Prof Julius Ogeng’o, replied to the DCI, which is carrying out its own investigation.
Mr Sakaja has in a number of past media interviews said he studied actuarial science at the University of Nairobi from 2002 to 2007.
In an interview run on NTV in June last year, the senator told comedian Daniel Ndambuki that he bought his first car- a Mercedes Benz while in fourth year at UoN in 2007. “Our family did not have a lot of money so I had businesses,” he said.

In an affidavit supporting a case filed at the IEBC Disputes Resolutions Committee, Mr Wahome said the senator, while filling the nomination Jubilee form in 2017, wrote that he graduated from the University of Nairobi.
“The respondent has demonstrated fraud and forgeries that have the potential to erode the public confidence in and diminish the integrity of qualifications in Uganda and Kenyan degrees both regionally as well as globally,” said Mr Wahome.
The Elections Act says a person “nominated as a candidate for election as president, deputy president, county governor or deputy county governor must be a holder of a degree from a university recognised in Kenya.”
But on June 6, just a day before the senator presented his papers to the IEBC, he applied to CUE asking the commission to ascertain the accreditation status of Team University in Uganda where he had graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Management.
According to the degree certificate the senator is said to have presented to CUE, he graduated on October 21, 2016. But a booklet from the institution for the graduation ceremony that took place in October 2016 does not contain Mr Sakaja’s name among the six BSC (Management) graduands.

“It is hereby confirmed that Team University is a recognised institution in Uganda. The qualification awarded by the said institution is also recognised in Uganda and by convention in Kenya,” CUE chief executive Mwenda Ntarangwi responded to the senator on June 6.
When contacted, Prof Ntarangwi said CUE “tried to investigate but the University wrote and said Mr Sakaja attended the programme online”. The qualifications were also confirmed by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. “Once they own a student, you can’t really dispute. That’s the way it is for us,” said Prof Ntarangwi.
On Tuesday after presenting his papers before the IEBC at Kasarani Gymnasium, Nairobi, the senator took a jibe at those questioning his academic credentials.
“Forget propaganda; sell your candidate. Our march is unstoppable, our faith unshakeable and our victory is inevitable,” he posted on Twitter.
In a petition challenging Mr Sakaja’s clearance, Mr Alex Musalia argues the senator had not satisfied the requirements of the law as it was not clear how he completed his degree studies abroad while serving as MP full-time. He says the circumstances under which the degree was accredited shortly before the submission of his papers to IEBC was suspect.

sakaja ni a lousy fraud,

The university papers of Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja have been a subject of discussion and social media trends in the past few weeks.

In a video uploaded on singer Nyashinski's YouTube channel on September 22, 2020, Sakaja said he has never pursued education out of the country.

The two were sharing seminal moments in their career journey when Sakaja divulged that he has pursued all his education in Kenya.
When asked after finishing high school where he proceeded for further education, he answered: "Mimi sijawahi toka Kenya in terms of education. Education yangu yote ilikua hapa...".

Loosely translated to: "I have never pursued education out of Kenya. I pursued all my education here in Kenya".

But nearly two years after the Interview, Sakaja is reported to have been cleared to vie for the Nairobi Governor seat with a degree certificate from a Ugandan institution, Team university.

A degree is a mandatory requirement for anyone seeking a Governor seat in Kenya.

Sakaja had fashioned himself as a graduate of the University of Nairobi where he earlier said he graduated with Actuarial Science.

But details have emerged that the Senator is yet to graduate from the university since joining the institution in 2003.

A letter from the University of Nairobi Deputy Vice-Chancellor Julius Ogeng'o to the Director of Criminal Investigations dated May 31, 2021, confirms otherwise.

The letter confirms that indeed Sakaja is still a student of UoN.

"He undertook the programme "Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science" at the university for four years from 2003/2004 to 2007/2008," Ogeng'o said in the letter, seen by the Star, to the DCI.

Surely, they just let him off the hook? In this country, institutions don't work, and so democracy should never be an option.

When institutions work with such laxity we are supposed to accept and move on. When intelligence informs the government that things are not kosher and the government refuses to endorse we talk of impeachment. Fooked up country.

😂😂😂, A road engineer being taught by a mechanical engineer? And the years of study and Rao's tenure as a lab assistant, Wacha jokes bana.
There are many units shared across the engineering disciplines. For instance, my friend who studied telecommunication engineering and graduated added less than 10 units more and graduated again with electric and electronic engineering, DeKUT. The purpose was certification by EBK.
Architecture students are also taught Structures by civil engineers, maths by maths department etc...and yes, some institutions even take them to mechanical, structural and electrical engineering labs after second yr.
