Match stats
  • Barcelona have knocked out PSG in each of their past three Champions League knock-out ties: 2012-13 quarter-finals, 2014-15 quarter-finals and 2016-17 last 16. The only previous time PSG overcame the Catalans in a Champions League knockout tie was in the 1994-95 quarter-finals.
  • The last time Barcelona and PSG met was in the 2016-17 last-16. The Catalan side became the first - and so far only - side to qualify for the next round following a 4+ goals first-leg margin of defeat (they lost the first leg 4-0 at Parc des Princes but won the return leg 6-1 at the Nou Camp).
  • Since 2012-13, only Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid have faced each other more often (10 times) than Barcelona and PSG (8) in the Champions League. Those eight games have produced 32 goals, an average of four per match.
Barcelona

  • Barcelona will attempt to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for a record 14th consecutive season. The last time they were knocked out in the round of 16 was in 2006-07 against Liverpool.
  • Barcelona have only lost one of their past 33 home games in the knockout stages (W25 D7), a 3-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals in 2012-13.
  • 44% of Barcelona's goals in this season's group stages came from set-pieces (seven out of 16), the highest ratio among the 16 teams left in the competition.
PSG

  • PSG have reached the knockout stages for the ninth consecutive season, matching the record for a French club set by Lyon between 2003-04 and 2011-12. They have made it past the last 16 once in the past four seasons, when they went all the way to the final last term.
  • PSG's only away win against a Spanish side in the knockout stages came eight years ago against Valencia. They have lost the past three visits to Spain in the competition by an aggregate scoreline of 11-2.
  • Kylian Mbappe has scored only one goal in his nine Champions League knockout games with PSG. He had found the net six times in six knockout games with Monaco.

Stats

  • None of RB Leipzig’s 22 Champions League games has ended goalless – that’s more than any other side in the history of the competition.

  • This is the first competitive encounter between RB Leipzig and Liverpool. However, this is Leipzig’s third English opponent in the Champions League since the start of 2020, eliminating Tottenham in last season’s round of 16 (4-0 on aggregate) and finishing ahead of Manchester Utd in this season’s group stages (5-0 defeat away and 3-2 win at home).

  • In what was his 114th appearance for Liverpool in all competitions, Brazil goalkeeper Alisson registered his 50th clean sheet for the Reds, with only Jan Oblak (59) and Ederson (64) managing more among goalkeepers within the top five European leagues since he joined the Reds in 2018-19.
  • English sides have now won each of their four European Cup/Champions League encounters to be played in Hungary, with Leeds United (in 1969 & 1974) and Liverpool (in 2009 and 2021) winning twice each.
  • RB Leipzig against Liverpool was the first European Cup/Champions League knockout match to be played in Hungary in just under 30 years, since Budapest Honved beat Sampdoria 2-1 in the last 16 of the 1991-92 competition.

These clubs' most recent meeting was four years ago, at the same stage, with Juventus progressing 3-0 on aggregate on that occasion. This time around, the Portuguese champions may have a better chance of laying a glove on their Italian counterparts.

Manchester United will be without Edinson Cavani, Donny van de Beek and Paul Pogba for their Europa League last 32 first leg against Real Sociedad.

The Ligue 1 leaders take on the Eredivisie leaders in a mouthwatering Europa League showdown on Thursday as Lille welcome Ajax to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy for the first leg of their last-32 tie.

Christophe Galtier's men qualified for the knockout stages as runners-up in Group H, whereas Ajax dropped down from the Champions League after finishing third in their group.

Ajax and Lille renew hostilities after locking horns in the group stage of the 2019-20 Champions League, and it was the Dutch side who took the spoils on both occasions, with a 3-0 home win preceding a 2-0 triumph at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea (11pm)

1614104142200.png

1614104023218.png

Chelsea will be without defender Thiago Silva for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
However, midfielders Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic are fit again and could feature in Romania.

Atletico's injured absentees include Jose Gimenez, Sime Vrsaljko and Yannick Carrasco, while Hector Herrera recently tested positive for Covid-19.

But Luis Suarez and Joao Felix should both start for the La Liga leaders.
Kieran Trippier also misses out for the Spanish club, with the England full-back still serving a suspension for breaking betting rules.

Chelsea go into the tie unbeaten in seven matches in all competitions since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager in January.

1614193961003.png

The 13-time European champions have only 11 fit senior players for the first leg in Bergamo on Wednesday.
"We never take risks," said Zidane about French forward Benzema.

Eden Hazard, Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal and Marcelo are also among those who will miss the first knockout game.

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini says his side, who reached the quarter-finals last season, remain wary of the threat posed by the Spanish giants.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

  • This is the first competitive encounter between Atalanta and Real Madrid. In fact, Atalanta's only previous meeting with a Spanish side in European competition was in last season's round of 16 when they faced Valencia - they won 8-4 on aggregate.

Atalanta
  • Atalanta are the first team since Sevilla (2007-08 & 2009-10) to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League in each of their first two appearances.
  • Atalanta are the only remaining side in this last 16 yet to win a single home game in the Champions League this season (D2 L1).

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Manchester City (11pm)

1614194087135.png

1614194159141.png

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan said last season's Champions League exit will not provide an extra source of motivation this year.

City beat Real Madrid at the same stage last year, but then lost 3-1 to Lyon in a one-legged quarter-final in Lisbon.

Manchester City have won 18 matches in a row in all competitions and manager Pep Guardiola wants them to continue what they have been doing.

This match will take place in Hungary because of coronavirus restrictions with Monchengladbach, eighth in the German Bundesliga and with only one win in five matches in all competitions, the designated 'home' team.

Team news
Manchester City have close to a fully-fit squad available with centre-back Nathan Ake their only notable absentee as the Dutchman continues to train alone after a muscular problem.

Record goalscorer Sergio Aguero is edging closer to a return after three matches as an unused substitute.

Guardiola has stressed the importance of rotating his squad so may return defender Kyle Walker, midfielder Phil Foden and forward Gabriel Jesus to the starting line-up after they were substitutes for Sunday's 1-0 win at Arsenal in the Premier League.

City aim for the quarter-finals for a fourth year in a row - the stats
  • Borussia Monchengladbach and Manchester City are facing each other for the seventh time - this is the most games for both teams against a single opponent in European competition.
  • Manchester City are unbeaten against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League (won three, drew one). However, their only previous encounter in the knockout stages of a European competition saw Gladbach beat City 4-2 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of the 1978-79 Uefa Cup.
  • Manchester City have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League for the eighth consecutive season, the longest current run for an English club - they will be aiming to make it to the quarter-finals for the fourth straight campaign.
  • It has been 43 years since Borussia Monchengladbach were in the knockout stages of the European Cup/Champions League. They lost 4-2 in the semi-finals of the 1977-78 European Cup against Liverpool.
  • Manchester City have won each of their past three away games in the Champions League last 16 - 4-0 v Basel in February 2018, 3-2 v Schalke in February 2019 and 2-1 v Real Madrid in February 2020.
  • Manchester City accrued 16 points in this season's Champions League group stage; the joint-most of any English side in a single group stage, along with Arsenal in 2005-06 (finalists), Manchester United in 2007-08 (winners) and Tottenham Hotspur in 2017-18 (last 16).
