Tories aren't winning the election doesn't matter who they put. That story of Johnson being MPs first choice is a lie. The information out there is that he didn't even get the backing of more than 60 MPs.
Less than 60?

Less than 60?I don't know where you're getting your information from but 100 MPs had pledged to back Johnson before he stepped down. And I also disagree, if Tories get a very strong candidate they can win the elections again. Labour has been in shambles and a lot of people have lost hope in them.

The rules required a candidate to receive backing of 100 MPs by Monday afternoon. Then all the candidates who got 100 MPs would be subjected to party voting on Friday. By Sunday evening only Sunak had the backing of more than 100MPs. That's why there was no need of party voting.
Why did Johnson step down if he had 100 MPs? Si angebaki kwa race and wait for Friday party members voting where he was likely to beat Sunak? The simple answer is Johnson never had the required numbers.
It was predicted from the beginning he was going to drop from the race even with all the support from the Tories. I don't know what their game plan is, but I'm sure there's one. Rishi is so unpopular, hata kama wangeweka mbwa against him, the dog would have won. They couldn't risk that party member vote, they had to install him themselves.
