A mother is left shocked after learning the reason for abbreviating ‘1st, 2nd and 3rd’ in the English language.
The 32-year-old mum uploaded a video to TikTok sharing the revelation by posting a caption on the screen that read: “At my big age of 32 I have just learnt that the 'st' in 1st, 'nd' in 2nd and 'rd' in 3rd are because they are the last letters of the words 'first' and so forth.”
Officially mind blown.
Unsurprisingly the internet was also shook by the spelling rule, with one person replying: “Omg...i've only just realised not even joking.”
Another responded: “Well you learn something new every day.”
A third person wrote: “Well, I aint even going to lie I didn’t know that and took me a minute to even get what you meant.”
While another person commented: "I am sadly guilty of this.”
We’re right there with you. However, some smug users claimed to have known this rule all along, as one person said: “Lmao what else did you think it meant?”
Another wrote: “I am an immigrant, English is my second language and I have known this since primary school.”
A third user commented: “I would love to know what country you’re from for those that didn’t know this.”
While another user said: “I remember when I used to write 'th' for everything 3th cause I never knew what it was for.”
Videos, where users reveal the meaning behind ‘everyday’ phrases and idioms, have become increasingly popular on the social media platform, proving that common knowledge is not very common.
