There’re gangs said to be extorting Sh60,000 daily from matatus serving the Kangare-Kaharate route in Murang’a county. The road is 43km long and has about 300 registered PSVs, each of which must pay Sh200 to be allowed to operate. Local suspect the gang to be part of the Mungiki sect.
A matatu owner, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, fearing for his life, said that complaining to the police is akin to signing one’s own death warrant.
The gang’s operation centres are Kaharati, Heho, Jikaze, Ha Geoffrey, Ha Kirore, Gakuria Hungu, at the Muthithi market and a few metres outside the Muthithi Police Station, with its control base at Gakira.
The gang beheaded two matatu crew members inside a church at Karuri trading centre for defying its orders and at least 10 matatus have been stolen never to be recovered.
