Safaricom, NCBA win cashless matatu fares platform contract

In a notice, National Safety and Transport Authority (NTSA) said the licensed 29 companies will offer a platform for cashless fare payment service.

It will most likely fail because it works against the interests of all stakeholders. The matatu crew would not wish to have their cash freedom curtailed, the owners would not like to see their earnings monitored, the police will face problems retrieving their share, the cartels deal in cash only, and the passengers would hate the hassle of mobile transactions. Remember the speed governors, which were supposed to report speeding drivers after the fact?
