History inasema aje? Those islands were occupied by fishermen from all the surrounding countries for a millenia but there weren't really any significant permanent residents. The 1800s roll around and both china and vietnam lay claim. Then came the colonial era and France (mkoloni wa vietnam) after a dustoff with china that left china with a bloody nose, decided the islands are french territories. Then world war 2 happens and Japan steam rolls everyone and take the islands. After the surrender of Japan in 45 , the story starts getting interesting.
When Japan renounced its claim to the islands in 1951, Taiwan, mainland China, and Vietnam all declared themselves the rightful owners, and the Philippines added a claim based on proximity in 1955.
In the 1970s South Vietnam(a USA puppet at this point) occupied three of the Spratly Islands (including Spratly Island itself) to forestall a Chinese occupation. Troops from Taiwan remained on Itu Aba. The Philippines then moved forces onto seven of the remaining islets and built an airstrip (1976) on Thitu Island. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which came into effect in the early 1980s, established the concept of exclusive economic zones (EEZ) that extended 200 nautical miles (370 km) from a country’s coast. The Spratlys subsequently became considerably more desirable for their potential resources.

Outside the Spratlys, kuna Scarborough shoal, hapa the Philipines had control till 2012, then they were bullied out by chinise naval ships without a shot being fired. Walisema they didn't want it to go the Johnson South Reef way. Since that time China has maintained a near permanent naval patrol around there na duru zinasema it may be next to be built.
Scarborough
Where is the U.S in all this, the U.S claims no one owns shit and the islands are in international waters. So every once in a while, to show china a middle finger they send their warships in this waters. Right now they have sent two carrier strike groups led by USS Nimitz and USS Ronald Reagan to assure "freedom" of movement in those waters.
And they wouldn't miss a photo op
