KNH health workers salary review
Health workers at KNH issue strike notice on September 21, 2020.
In 2012 the state corporation advisory committee evaluated all parastatals in the country including referral hospitals such as KNH which they upgraded from level 3B to 7A, consequently elevating all the 7000 employees to a different salary scale.
In 2019, the hospital’s management board approached Treasury seeking funds to implement the new salary figures for the health workers. Treasury set aside Ksh.2.4 billion and handed over Ksh.601 million to KNH early this year.
In the re-categorization process, salary scales for all job categories were factored in and improved,
1) job group K1 earning slightly over Ksh.191,000 would now earn a minimum of Ksh.318,566.
2) job group K3 earning slightly above Ksh.141,000 would now earn a minimum of Ksh.211,793
3) job group K13 earning Ksh.23,810 were now entitled to a minimum salary of Ksh.27,509.
The SRC has however since put breaks on the implementation process saying the re-categorization was only meant to move the hospital to a higher category but did not involve any salary review.
Against this, the SRC now says that staff members have actually been benefiting from salary increments for the remuneration review cycle of 2017/18 to 2020/21 following job evaluations at the hospital in 2017.
The commission also says it did not offer any advice on the current demands for salary increases adding that the hospital management and trade unions representing the workers previously held discussions on salary additions, a proposition that the commission was against.
It stated that institutional re-categorisation is not a basis for salary change but will re-evaluate jobs at the hospital and address any emerging issues.

from the proposed increments
1) job group K1 = Ksh.191,000 to Ksh.318,566. = Ksh 127,566 increment
2) job group K3 = Ksh.141,000 to Ksh.211,793 = ksh 70,793 increment
3) job group K13 = Ksh.23,810 to Ksh.27,509. = ksh 3,699 increment
is this really a fair salary increment?
almost doubling the higher scales and a small increment for the lower scale?
ama the lower scale group should go back to school and add more knowledge?
or will one justify and say, the higher the scale group, the more risks they take, hence a larger compensation?
this lie that we should all work hard to get better pay should stop.
we cant all be CEOS, we cant all be paid the same salary, but we shouldn't have very huge pay gaps between job groups.
