This house 'nigga', who lied to the world that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction is of course dead. Reading the story about him, I was struck with one thing - they keep calling him 'black' (no human is black or white, of course). How is this dude (and Barrack Obama) 'black'? Which natural-born African looks like this guy?
My point is, we have allowed the racist mzungu to determine our race, our history, our culture, our language, our religion, almost everything.
Looking at this house 'nigga' - and I am using this word loosely here - isn't it obvious he's more 'white' than 'Black'? So why do we agree that he's 'black'? The one-drop rule of course; so we contemporary Africans have bought into the racist southern US slave master narrative that anybody who has a drop of 'Black' blood is 'Black'. Whites are pure as snow, apparently.
The tragedy is, similar normalisation of racist stereotypes, nomenclature and whatnot is all around us. The terms 'Black' and 'white' are themselves racist as were the description of the Chinese as 'yellow' - the Chinese protested and the latter term was dropped. Why do we continue using the terms 'white' and 'black'? Have you ever met a black person. A white one?
And yet we continue to agree to use these terms, well knowing that black in the English language is 98% associated with things bad. And we expect the world's children not to look down on 'black' people?
Listening to the BBC, you'd think that Africa is one dark, miserable blob of black poverty, disease and hunger, and not a complex continent of 1.5 billion people and 54 countries. They still look at 'Africa' the way they looked at it 200 years ago. Some countries on the continent are even put in the Middle East just because they are inhabited by Arabs - when you hear a young British girl say breathlessly that "I visited Africa' she is putting it exactly as Henry Stanley or the rapist David Livingstone did 150 years ago - she went to 'Black' Africa - the racism of old still permeates the new. Not Kenya, not Senegal, not Malawi, no. She went to that amorphous black blob of poverty, disease and hunger called Africa.
Today, PC culture in European societies, including those in the America's, continue to use centuries-old stereotypes in subtle ways. We allow them without questioning as if its the most normal thing. They re-invent history and geography (Australia and New Zealand are in the West!), and camouflage their racism under benign terms such as 'the international community' (themselves), 'rules-based order (what they say), etc.
In Kenya and Africa they'll talk of 'tribalism', in the Balkans they'll speak of 'nationalism'. And we allow it. In Kenya and Africa they'll talk of regimes. In Europe they'll talk of 'administrations'. In Kenya and Africa they'll talk of 'harmful' cultural practices like polygamy (I thought what adults do behind closed doors is their business?), as they tell us it normal and natural to insert ones penis into another man's rectum (cultural imperialism).
Until recently we allowed the White Messiah narratives to flood our social spaces. In Kenya, we are even blind-walking into a second colonialism - where a handful of Europeans control hundreds of thousands of hectares of our land - because European conservationists know best how to safe-guard our wildlife - the same wildlife we have lived with for millions of years and which they almost decimated starting 1880. But they are 'white' conservationists (hallo Northern Ranges Trust, 450,000 hectares you say) and we are Black poachers - the way we were in 1940.
Why we allow it is beyond me.
Ferk you Powell
