The French removed Djohar and Mohamed Taki Abdoulkarim became president
His death in November 1998, He was succeeded by Interim President Tadjidine Ben Said Massounde.
April 1999, Colonel Azali Assoumani, Army Chief of Staff, seized power in a bloodless coup, overthrowing the Interim President Massounde
Azali led the Comoros through constitutional changes that enabled new elections in 2006 which were won by Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi
Elections in late 2010, former Vice-President Ikililou Dhoinine was elected as president
The 2016 elections, Azali Assoumani, from Ngazidja, became president for a third term
