The Minister for Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, has officially handed over a large-scale exploration and mining license for strategic Rare Earth Elements (REE) to the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO). The milestone positions STAMICO to undertake major mining operations intended to benefit all Tanzanians.

The handover ceremony took place at Sesenga Primary School grounds in Sesenga Village, Mgazi Ward, Morogoro District, following the Tanzanian government’s decision to reclaim the license from Wigu Hill Mining Company Limited after a ruling by the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

Speaking to hundreds of citizens gathered at the public event, Minister Mavunde emphasized the global importance of Rare Earth Elements, noting their widespread use in:
  • Military technologies
  • Smartphones and computers
  • Electric vehicle batteries
  • Medical equipment
  • Advanced industrial machinery
“This is a golden opportunity for Sesenga village, Morogoro region, and the entire nation to benefit from this critical natural resource,” said Minister Mavunde.
