To answer your question - The two cannot fight because they are about control of the populace. They complement each other -one uses coercion to keep people orderly while the other uses persuasion and scaremongering. They then both eat from the tamed people.
Then there is the huge problem of numbers - governments fear huge numbers and religion has them. And when one denomination finds their numbers not scaring enough they call on their ecumenical brothers.

The Roman empire integrated Christianity their rule because they were loosing grip to the religion.
