Justice for victims of Widho-Majembeni killings in Lamu
• It’s with deep sorrow that I condole my great people of widho, salama, Majembeni area in Lamu west over the sad incident that befell us. The horrendous loss of six (6) lives in a terror like attack on innocent peasants eking a living from small farms through an organized crime and their subsequent burning to death cannot be stomached by any sane human being.
• The problem of peasant farmers is more than meet the eye as threat to their existence has been on the upward trend since the infamous Mpeketoni and Hindi massacres by Alshabaab. Just like before, the local farmers strongly belief, the drivers of these unrelenting attacks are a cartel of land dealers who connive with State and County officials to lay claim on any piece of land , irrespective of whether it’s settled for decades by peasant farmers or not.
• The people of Lamu West cannot continue living in fear occasioned by crooks and criminals who in cahoots with organized criminals cause death and destruction of their lives and livelihoods.
• What hurt us most is that, the good government of President Uhuru wa Kenyatta has done all it can to restore peace and stability in Lamu County but some criminals out to dispossess the poor out of their settlements are using any trick including riding on terror story to painfully and heinously kill our people.
• This is NOT acceptable and we will not take it lying down! We therefore make a humble appeal to HE: The President and the State security machinery to unravel the outstanding land ownership conflict between local residents and rich cartels and it’s relation to this incident. Many conflict do exist over settled farmland and we will not want this to be trend used to displace our people out of their land.
• As the people of Lamu West, we will cooperate and be ready to point out to the government of the probable culprits who are causing us these problem as threat to our farms by land grabbers with cooked documents is on the rise.
• Lastly; I am condoling with family members, friend and the farmer society in Lamu West on the horrible killings that befell us last night.
