A laboratory technologist at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret is seeking protection after surviving a shooting allegedly carried out by her estranged partner, a DCI officer stationed in Sotik. Grace Nduku Mwangagi reports that the officer, Japin Nyachae, shot her in the face on October 13, 2025, after years of domestic abuse. The bullet tore through her cheek and ear, narrowly avoiding major organs.
She says the officer is still actively serving despite an ongoing investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), under reference number IPOA/CMU/3638/2025. Now living in fear, Nduku is pleading for justice and protection for herself and her child. Rights groups note that her case highlights a troubling rise in intimate partner violence in Kenya, including incidents involving members of the security services.
“No woman should be forced to live in fear in her own home,” she says.
