Homicide detectives have arrested Kennedy Kalombotole, the prime suspect in the recent killings of two patients at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). Kalombotole’s arrest follows the brutal murder of Edward Maingi Ndegwa, a patient admitted to Ward 7B on July 11, 2025. According to KNH management, Ndegwa’s death was discovered shortly after visiting hours when hospital staff found his body in blood-soaked beddings. The discovery caused panic among other patients in the ward.
Hospital authorities immediately alerted security agencies, who responded to the scene, processed the area for evidence, and transported the body for further examination. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the timeline of the incident indicates that the ward nurse last checked on Ndegwa at 11:30 a.m., taking his blood pressure. At 12:30 p.m., a family member visited and found him stable, leaving the ward at around 1:30 p.m. However, by 2:00 p.m., a cleaner noticed blood pooling around the patient’s neck, prompting an emergency response.
When detectives arrived at the scene, they discovered bloody slipper prints leading from the victim’s bedside to a nearby toilet and ultimately to a side room, where Kalombotole was located. In that room, investigators recovered a pair of blue slippers and a blood-stained bedsheet. Additionally, detectives found a knife wrapped in gloves on the ground directly below the 7th-floor window corresponding to the victim's ward.
All recovered evidence was forwarded to the National Forensic Laboratory for detailed analysis to strengthen the case against the suspect. Further investigations have linked Kalombotole to a previous murder case within the same hospital. He was admitted to KNH on December 1, 2024, and is now the prime suspect in the February 6-7, 2025, killing of Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni, 40, who was murdered in Ward 7C under similar circumstances.

This arrest raises questions on how they missed the suspect the first time given the sloppiness with which he executed the second murder.
