You would do well to distinguish between white-collar crimes/corporate crimes and these other ordinary run-of-the-mill crimes.

The former are hard to prosecute and the jail terms are usually short and lenient. Their professional bodies are supposed to sanction them further eg deregister and ban them from practicing.

As for the later, the penal code usually have cast iron jail sentences, which are normally harsh, disproportionate and draconian as they usually involve violence, as in this case.
