Police are looking for a gang that robbed a Chinese national of Sh5.2 million that he was taking to a bank in South B area, Nairobi.
The victim identified as Shan Xiu Min, who is an accountant at a firm in the city, said the stated amount, which was to be deposited at a local bank along Mombasa Road, was in local currency.
He was in the company of a driver, and when they reached at Bellevue area at about 11 am Thursday, the driver stopped claiming he had been flagged down by police.
The driver stopped after branching off Mombasa Road into South B estate, almost a kilometre away from the highway.
And in the process, two men armed with knives approached the car and threw the Chinese out of the car before they drove off with the driver.
Nairobi deputy police boss James Mugera said they are investigating the incident.
He said the attack could be an inside job, and efforts to trace the driver are ongoing.
“We are investigating it, but it seems the said thieves knew about the money,” he said.
Meanwhile, police are holding a 61-year-old woman over claims she and others obtained up to Sh1.4 million from unsuspecting Kenyans in pretext they would help them join the Kenya Prisons Service in the recently concluded recruitment in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
The money was obtained from at least four people who wanted their kin to join the service.
They were issued with fake calling letters prompting them to report to the police who arrested the woman.
Police say they are looking for more suspects in the probe. The recruitment was conducted on Tuesday and it was free of charge.
The woman was expected in court on Friday, where police asked for more days under miscellaneous application to hold her as investigations go on.
Authorities had warned Kenyans against giving out bribes for the recruitment.
Tens of people are conned during such events in the country amid campaigns to stop the same.
