In 1983, Jane Birkin spilled the contents of her bag on a plane. The complaint she made to the stranger sitting beside her would change the future of the handbag. Guess how long the waiting list can be for a 'Birkin Bag'... 👜
In 1983, actress Jane Birkin was on a flight from Paris to London. As she placed her straw bag in the overhead compartment, it took a tumble, throwing the contents to the floor. As she gathered up her belongings, she complained to the man sitting beside her. It had, she explained, been so difficult for her to find a bag she actually liked. Luckily for Birkin, the man fated to be her fellow passenger that day was Jean-Louis Dumas, the chief executive for French luxury goods maker Hermès. They would go on to spend the flight planning her ideal bag... on the back of an airplane sick-bag.
In 1984, Dumas created the 'Birkin' bag. Jane Birkin used it for a while, but soon complained that she was carrying too much in it.
What's the use of having a second one? You only need one and that busts your arm; they're bloody heavy. I'm going to have to have an operation for tendonitis in the shoulder.
Despite this ramble, she went on to have five of her specially designed bags, only using one at a time and until they wore out.
In 2015, she sent a public letter to Hermès requesting them to remove her name from the crocodile skin version of the bag due to ethical concerns in its manufacture. Soon after, Hermès announced they had satisfied Birkin with their reassurances. From that chance meeting on a plane, one of the most iconic bags would be born. Today the Birkin is a symbol of wealth and exclusivity. With waiting lists of six years reported at one time, the highly coveted bag has become a firm favorite among collectors.

Should be called a bitching bag, going by her numerous complaints.
